For those who don’t want to wrestle their way into their underwear and want a sexy, sassier option there’s always the body shaping attire.
But with bodycon, body contouring and bandage dresses it’s hard to know where to start – we’ve got the lowdown on the figure hugging frocks that will help you hide those lumps and bumps.
Bodycon, bandage and body contouring – what are they and what’s the difference?
They all claim to offer the same thing, a snugly fitting dress providing a slimming frame but despite the similar titles, they all provide this service in slightly different ways.
Shops and magazines will often list them all under the same name so it doesn’t hurt to search for all three terms when trying to track down one for yourself.

Body contouring
Body contouring dresses basically create the illusion that you are slimmer than you are.
Often these dresses will have a light and bright colour at the front with two dark panels either side, shaving the pounds off either side of you.
The panelling is often suggestively curved creating a slim but womanly figure.
There are, however, plenty of body contouring dresses which have a different style depending on what asset you would like to enhance.
Jane Hill recently received a lot of attention for her green hourglass shaped dress with a clever black band under the bust making her bosoms appear to be casting a large shadow and therefore creating the illusion that it is larger.
Eva Longoria opted for a more subtle version with just a few triangle panels either side to give the impression of a nipped in waist.

And Rachel Riley dazzled in yet another eye-catching get-up on Countdown.
During an episode of the Channel Four show, the stunning brainbox shrunk her waist in an ‘illusion’ style dress.
The tight frock cleverly featured cream wavy lines making her waist appear even slimmer and accentuating her curves.

Bodycon
A bodycon dress is usually a tight, figure hugging number which has a weighty material, designed to pull you in and smooth out your lumps and bumps.
However these days the term is often just used for flattering figure hugging dresses.
They can come in all shapes and sizes – lacy, with cut outs, plunging and backless, but they all have something in common- they are all tight.

The reality star is enjoying wearing tight clothing to show off her impressive three-stone weight loss.
Bandage
The first bandage dress hit the catwalk in 1989 as the grand finale of Hervé Léger’s runway show, but it wasn’t until the likes of Victoria Beckham and other celebrities went crazy for the dresses in the 00s that they became mainstream.

Women were scrambling to get their hands on the high street versions of the designer gowns because along with their sexy designs, the bandage style created the perfect slim line shape.
The womanly dresses are made up of thick strips of fabric which work to “bandage” your shape and flatten out problem areas.
Will they make me look thinner?
Probably yes but choose carefully and take your style into consideration.
More mature ladies may want to consider opting for a body contouring dress, they are often cut to the knee and a really elegant option for an evening event.

If you want to make more of a statement, the bodycon and bandage dresses are usually a more revealing choice.
The body contouring panels can also be an excellent option for those hoping to look a little lighter without the dieting.
For the bravest amongst us, bodycon is definitely an option but it may not make you look slimmer, depending on the style and cut that you chose.
Flimsier materials will not provide smooth lines and could end up making you look larger so make sure you try things on before you buy and choose something well-fitting rather than too tight or loose.
